| The Piazza della Signoria was formed in 1268, when the Guelph party gained control of the city and decided to raze the houses of their Ghibelline rivals to the ground. It was here, in 1497, that the fanatical monk Savonarola had his followers throw their wordly goods into the "Bonfire of the Vanities". He was hanged here a year later. |
