The city is famed for its artisans during the 15th and 16th centuries. This is a statue of Albrecht Duhrer (1471-1528) who was an artist/architect. The building is a museum featuring his life and art.

Also active at the time were the Meistersinger, members of guilds formed to cultivate music and poetry, including the poet, composer and dramatist Hans Sachs (1494-1576).
