To Missoula on the Northern Parks Ltd. |
Tuesday May 30, 2000 - Yellowstone We were able to go over the Beartooth Highway which had just reopened. This was spectacular. You pass through 4 vegetation zones: foothills, mountain, subalpine and alpine. At the top (just under 11,000 ft.) the snow was still 2 to 3 feet deep, with some drifts higher than the bus. Is was warm out, though, so we played in the snow a bit.
As we descended the pass, the weather changed abruptly from bright sunshine to dense fog and clouds. Descending to the valley floor at Red Lodge, the skies remained overcast. We checked into the Radisson North hotel in Billings for two nights! It was nice to live out of a closet for a change. We were clearly back in civilization. Dinner tonight was on our own, which also a pleasant change. We both had blackened prime rib.
